Enough Talk…Let’s do it!

March 31, 2009 · Leave a Comment

n56796876149_5704There’s no shortage of debate about how to fix the economy. To us, there’s no question. Fixing the economy is a grassroots effort that starts right here. The Huntington Township Business Council — an alliance of chambers of commerce, business organizations, community and civic groups, government officials and other community stakeholders — is attacking the economic crisis with initiatives that will get the ball rolling where it matters most… right here in our own backyards. The core of this multi-faceted approach is a simple concept — Buy Locally – because money spent in the community stays in the community. When businesses choose to do business with local vendors, and when consumers choose to shop in their downtown areas and at locally owned stores, the whole community benefits. It’s a bottom-up approach that will start economic recovery where it counts most — right here.

portofino-paintings-003“If you live on Long Island, you can now visit 3 of my original paintings at Caffe Portofino in lovely Northport village. We had a great time visiting the paintings yesterday and sipping lattes (and baby formula) out of the chill morning air.”

Best coffee on Long Island, Newsday

November 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

BY PAT BURSON and ANNE MACHALINSKI

November 16, 2008

Some like theirs black and strong. Others prefer it light and sweet. They do agree on one thing, though: They want it hot.

We asked readers for favorite spots to grab a cup of coffee on Long Island. (Yeah, coffee. What did you think we were talking about?)

Here are their picks:

Caffé Portofino
249 Main St., Northport
631-262-7656
caffeportofino11768.com

– Picked by: Neil Halloran, East Northport

COST: $1.90 for 12-ounce cup

WHY: ”The coffee’s outstanding,” says Halloran, an Adelphi University professor and “big coffee drinker….I usually have a small Portofino, black, their regular blend. It’s a nice taste. I also can put espresso in it and get a nice high.”

Owner Lisa Wrage says the two coffee bestsellers are the house blend and Kona-Costa Rican blend. “We probably sell between 150 to 200 cups of the Kona blend a day. The house blend is a full-bodied medium roast, and the Kona-Costa Rican has a rich, bold, deep flavor without being bitter.”
